The
Tubes
- The Tubes. During the war years
four torpedo tubes were set up on the north side headland area in
conjunction with the gun emplacement on Bowen Is to guard the
entrance of the bay. These rusty remains are still visible on the
rocks presently used as fishing spots. The "Tubes" are renowned as
one of the few spots where fisherman can catch and land marlin
from the shore. The Tubes were placed for protection of ships in
the Bay , on occasions converted troopships the Queen Elizabeth
& Queen Mary These two luxury liners were two of the fastest
ships afloat in pre-war days. The ships laden with troops and
supplies in Sydney Harbour would slip out of port and shelter in
Jervis bay to confuse enemy submarines which may be lurking in
wait. When the coast was clear the ships would embark for their
Middle East destinations.
