Jo’s first Whale

15th October 2006

I first met Jo this weekend on Ocean Trek, and we shared a cabin on saloon deck…more about that later…

Nunz and I were fashionably late to board OT, but as it was my 7th time, I didn’t think Mick or Lyn would mind. As it turned out, Lyn had the weekend off…(Diving in Tonga) so no worries at all!! The M7 is great BTW…

There were 9 of us getting excited, geee’d up to dive the JB yet again. The weather report predicted NE winds and I was hoping, praying that we would dive past the heads. Never in my time on OT have we gone past Pt Perpendicular..fingers crossed.

Back to Jo…it was soon known that Jo had never seen whales, even from afar, and never seen a manta ray… poor girl, what a deprived diving life she has lead. But worst of all, she snored, and I was a room mate….oh oh, give some ear plugs somebody! Before I went to bed, I took honey & lemon, couple of Panadol (the next best thing to valium) and snuck into the cabin hoping to fall asleep ASAP…luckily it worked and had a good sleep!

Next morning, to my delight, it was sunny and a NE was blowing and our first couple of dives on Saturday were the Whorehouse & Pt Perpendicular, past the heads…yay!!! Unfortunately vis was pretty average and my buddy Nunz was feeling not the best, so bad that he nearly had the urge to supply fish food….at 20m down under! That being the case, we didn’t see much, in fact, zilch, nothing much to photograph for Nunz the budding photographer. Desperation kicked in, so he decided to take photographs of yours truly, but my modelling skills underwater and striking a pose with attitude, need to be improved vastly.

Food was excellent, as always, with Harriet being the new Supercook (Sue being the old Supercook). Andrew the diving guru briefed us all very well and Mick did his best to take us to the best dive sites that the weather would permit.

A fun, relaxing and another good time on OT.

Jervy’s Bay!! One of the most great dive sites in Australia!

That’s what I was told when I arrived from France.

After two unsuccessful trials – week ends cancelled due to a bad weather – I managed , at last, to come.

Unfortunately, the conditions were not so good, especially with a poor visibility. In addition a wounded knee prevented me from diving on Sunday.

Nevertheless, this week end will remain in my memory as a very good one.

First what’s better than a liveaboard? So quiet, so peaceful. So far from the noise and the activity of Sydney.

In addition the show of the whales splashing the water with their tails… How spectacular!

And, what’s always one of the major points for a French: "nous avons bien mange". The food was excellent.

Good food, good mood, nice people, nice crew…What else do we need to enjoy a week end?

Thanks for all, and don’t change anything…

G fun

J’espre avoir l’occasion de revenir pour profiter aussi des plongees exceptionnelles de Jervy’s Bay.

Je vous dis donc :"Au revoir. A bientot, j’espere."

I was told we were coming out for strippers beer and fishing, you could imagine my surprise when I was put on this boat and told to go diving…. Well after getting over the setback of no strippers, a limited amount of beer … someone showed me how the breathing thingamagig works and said make sure you come back when you run out of air…. This diving thing is easy… so with the good food, the glass like conditions of Jervis bay, I could get used to going scuba diving once I work out what ERR means on my dam wrist watch….

Cameron!

JB always knows when I am coming, less than average conditions and winds….aaaaahhhhh. But I did manage to do all 6 dives in a wet wetsuit at 16 degrees, s’ok, after a while you don’t feel a thing ! Mick to the rescue after dinner with some good vodka !! The weekend was all about relaxing, diving and having fun, taking photos (for Cameron to critique), and of course eating too much of the good cooking.

WHALES, yes there were whales, I have managed never to see a whale ‘till this weekend, then to see them inside the Bay, frolicking and tail waving for what seemed an endless amount of time J Let it be known that Tiger Anemones do" grow" on Tulip Sponges, another 1st for me.

Anyway a fantastic weekend, good company, great food and diving and thanks to my buddies Ron & Cameron. The crew whereas expected fantastic !!!

Until next time…..Jo.

JB is a regular dive location for me and my hub but not on a liveaboard. We have seen Ocean Trek often floating around JB and had wondered what it would be like with the opportunity to be taken to new sites other than those we normally visit or be shown new perspectives on our usual haunts. This Mick and his jolly crew performed admirably. That, comfortable quarters, excellent food and a much more relaxed atmosphere made the weekend enjoyable. Day dive boats are great but spend some quality time on Ocean Trek and you won’t be disappointed!

We will see you all again…..

My first trip on Ocean Trek and what a fantastic time. Having seen it while doing the day boat thing and wondering what it would be like on a liveaboard it did not disappoint. The crew were fantastic, the food absolutely yummy, and the diving excellent. Six dives, all at different sites with different critters made for some great memories. Standing on the back of the boat, watching 3 whales tail slap for nearly 5 minutes, will be unforgettable. Thanks heaps Mick, Andrew and Harriet (our own little Hitler!) for making such a great weekend.

Cheers Ron

Another Great trip on OT. Thanks Mick, Hatti and Andrew for a great weekend, I hope to be back soon.
