Orca
16th August 2009

Most definitely the best temperate diving in NSW. Seals that won’t stop playing, PJs by the hundreds, huge boulders forming great swim-through systems, and Orcas on the surface. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Tasos and I popped an SMB at the end of our last dive for the weekend and settled in for a 7 minute hang. A minute in to the stop and Tasos gave one of the unofficial, but universal hand signals – his hand cupped to his ear. We could hear the high pitched sound of whales, and thought they must be close – shame we were stuck on deco. But the crew on board got the benefit of our stop as they watched a pod of 6 ORCAS cruise by within 5m of the SMB.

Safety stops are a bit boring. All you can do is sit there, maybe look at the photos you took during the dive. After 5 minutes or so you surface, and then people ask you: "did you see the six orcas circling your SMB?". No we didn’t ! And this is the second time something like this happens to me… I was at the great barrier reef 3 years ago diving osprey reef. During the briefing for one of our dives, we were told that if we were really lucky we would see great hammerheads. During the dive at some point I see almost everyone pointing towards the blue open water. I looked and looked and couldn’t see anything. There were a bunch of great hammerheads going by, and everyone else saw them. Saw I missed seeing hammerheads at osprey reef and orcas at jervis bay. What’s next? I hope these things do not keep happening… I guess I just have to come back and dive Jervis Bay a few more times until I see the orcas.

Not a bad weekends diving. Yeah right, it was GREAT. Only dive inside the bay was the night dive, had diving both south side and north. Finally got my new camera to take a few decent shots (Thanks Lyn). Seals, whales, viscous killer PJs and ocras what more could you want? The food was up the normal high standard. Thanks everyone for a GREAT weekends diving.
