Overseas Trip  2010

Destination 3 "Tonga"

11-18th October 2010

8 days 7 nights exit Sydney $3000 non diver $ 2800

Snorkelling with Humpback Whales mother's and calves for 3 days up live and very very close. One of the few countries in the world that allows interaction with whales

Swimming with humpback whales must truly be one of life's most incredible experiences. In most countries it's illegal to swim with these whales, but the Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific is an exception. The whale-swimming industry is vital to the future of Tonga's humpbacks as some of the profits from commercial whale-watching operations flows back into whale conservation .

The Vava'u island group in the north is Tonga's main centre for whale-watching, yacht charters, diving and game fishing. The islands are a nursery for humpback whales, and every winter, as they have done for centuries, several hundred make the annual migration from Antarctica to these warm waters to mate and give birth.

It's a paradox in nature that the largest of mammals are also the gentlest and most approachable in the animal kingdom. There's a calmness as you approach them that few words can describe. They are keenly aware of human presence and gently move around as if they know how fragile we are to them.

To come eye-to-eye with a whale as it twirls gracefully in the water is an unbelievably beautiful and surreal experience. They appear so trusting that it is hard to imagine that we almost hunted them to the brink of extinction less than 20 years ago.

When commercial whaling ended in the 1960s, fewer than 250 whales remained from a Tongan population that reached as many as 10,000. Subsistence hunting further threatened them until it was outlawed by the King of Tonga. Today the Tongan humpback whale population has slowly recovered to an estimated 700 animals.

There are strict guidelines for swimming with whales, for the protection of both swimmers and the whales. It's not possible to just jump in the water on your own; you have to go with a licensed whale-watching operator, and only these craft are allowed within 300m of a whale. Only four people are allowed in the water with the whales at any one time, and they must be escorted by a guide.

The whale migration season in Tonga runs from July to October. As well as swimming with the whales, in a week it's possible to dive in a tropical aquarium; kayak with dolphins and sea turtles; sample a kava ceremony at a traditional Tongan feast; or simply do absolutely nothing.

Tourism is still in its infancy in Tonga and accommodation can be basic. If you can't survive without your hairdryer or mobile phone for a few days, then it may not be for you. But for those seeking a gentle space, unspoiled environment and their own David Attenborough moments, it is paradise.
